Move over ‘Avatar,’ we have a new box office leader in town. Disney and Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has now been crowned the no. 1 grossing movie of all time at the worldwide box office, surpassing previous record-holder 2009’s ‘Avatar.’
Through Friday, ‘Endgame’ grossed $2.7892 billion globally, and was just $500,000 shy of ‘Avatar’s $2.7897 billion records. But as of Sunday, ‘Endgame’s total was $2.790 billion just edging out the James Cameron directed the project.
The Marvel team announced the big news late Saturday afternoon after taking the stage at San Diego Comic-Con. Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn releases a statement regarding the milestone, saying,
“A huge congratulation to the Marvel Studio and Walt Disney Studio teams, and thank you to the fans around the world eho lifted Avengers: Endgame to these historic heights.”
Horn did still acknowledge the significance of ‘Avatar’ in the film industry saying,
Of course, even with the passage of a decade, the impact of James Cameron’s Avatar remains as powerfull as ever. And the astonishing
achievements of both these films are ongoing proof of the power of movies to move people and bring them together in a shared experience.”
Now if becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time wasn’t enough ‘Avengers: Endgame’ has also shattered numerous other records since debuting in cinemas in late April such as having the biggest global opening of all time with $1.22 billion, including an all-time high of $357.1 million domestically and $866.5 million overseas. The film is the fourth outing in the blockbuster Avengers series and the 22nd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
