Super Bowl champion Mitch Petrus dies of heatstroke at 32. The retired NFL offensive lineman reportedly passed away in Arkansas on July 18 after spending the day working outside at his parents’ shop.
The pulaski county coroner told CNN that Petrus was pronounced dead just before midnight. He had been taken to the hospital several hours earlier upon falling ill.
Petrus played for the Tennessee titans and new England patriots after winning super bowl xlvi with the new york giants in 2012.
The University of Arkansas football team paid tribute to his memory honoring Petrus as a standout alumnus and athlete.
Petrus’ death comes amid a widespread heatwave throughout the U.S. that left approximately 200 million people under some kind of heat advisory, according to the National Weather service.
Petrus’ Arkansas town was among the locations affected and temperatures reportedly reached 92 degrees the day Mitch Petrus died.
